Dancing

Cheek to cheek, I swept you off your feet, under a red half-light.
We were dancing in an existential moment, that we replayed all night.

But I was warned,
you’d dance around me.
Offering a ticketed smile,
to a roller coaster fool like me.

Heart to heart, I felt our poles apart, your hesitant hand in mine.
We were going through the syncopated motions, but I still smiled all night.

And I was warned,
you’d dance around me.
Offering a ticketed smile,
to a roller coaster fool like me.

And I’m still dancing,
like you’re still here
Flashing that smile,
and once in a while, help me to fly

By spinning me, spinning me, spinning me, ‘round.
Spinning me, spinning me, spinning me, spinning me, High…
Then falling down, falling down, falling down, hard – falling down low.

Back to back, I felt my world attack, battling pistols at dawn.
We were nothing but an artifice of solace, which tricked me to sleep each night.

As I was warned,
you danced around me.
Offering a ticketed smile,
what a roller coaster ride –
let’s dance.
