Smiling Upside-down

Sometimes, it’s easier to find,
a reckless final fool,
Than to find a friend.
Do do de do do do.

Some wine, you find, yields to water,
a divine prophetic noose,
To hang your faith.
Do do de do do do

Life’s a shady cloud, on a summer afternoon.
That sometimes brings the rain.
You can whistle out a happy, happy tune,
And still be smiling upside-down.

Sometimes, pristine pronouncements,
are just the ides of March,
Just a stab in the back.
Do do de do do do

Some, graduation days,
are just free-wheeling gears,
For you to catch.
Do do de do do do

Life’s a shady cloud, on a summer afternoon.
That sometimes brings the rain.
You can whistle out a happy, happy tune,
And still be smiling upside-down.

Sometimes, a party invitation,
Is just an empty glass.
No extended hand.
Do do de do do do.

Some, off-hand catch-up phone calls,
are just a boasting slap
To drag you down.
Do do de do do do.

Life’s a shady cloud, on a summer afternoon.
That sometimes brings the rain.
You can whistle out a happy, happy tune,
And still be smiling upside-down.
